tribunal rules in favour of employee

Tribunal rules in favour of employee Gay students who worry about homophobic bullying in their part-time jobs could be interested to hear one firm has been ordered to pay more than £35,000 compensation to an employee who quit his job after being harrassed over his sexuality.

Stephen Price, 25, told a Cardiff tribunal how his "sex obsessed" boss - Mair Jones - at Presbyterian Church used to turn everything he said into a sexual innuendo and teased him over being gay.

The employment tribunal ruled he was discriminated against because of his sexuality as well as upholding claims of constructive dismissal.

"We accept Mr Price's evidence of Mair Jones's conduct. He started as a cheerful and enthusiastic young man and there is no evidence of a vindictive side to his nature nor that his claims were fabricated," Rachel Davies, employment judge, said.

Price was awarded £11,924 for constructive dismissal and £25,000 for injury to his feelings, reports Personnel Today.

Meanwhile, the Trades Union Congress called on the government earlier in the week to include equality education in the school curriculum to address the problem of homophobic bullying.
