Students and part-time workers can have a more healthier lifestyle by choosing to cycle or walk to work, it has been claimed.

According to Sustrans Active Travel, 71 per cent of the 25 million people who travel to work do so by car.

However, rising fuel prices are expected to mean cycling or walking are more cost-effective, as well as healthier.

The organisation noted that active employees have been found to be more productive and take fewer sick days each year.

In its report, the organisation cites comments from Dame Carol Black, national director for work and health, who said active workers are "more motivated and less prone to sickness" – something which can also benefit employers.

"A healthy workplace is therefore something for all responsible and forward-looking businesses to aspire to," she claimed.

Earlier this year, Steve Flanagan, commercial director of Bupa's health insurance business, said companies are "keen to play their part in keeping Britain healthy".

However, organisations need guidance on how to provide the best workplace health services for their employees and methods of measuring how effective they are, he stated.
