Digital media literacy is crucial for the UK's global competitiveness, one survey has said.
A poll by development agency South West Screen at last week's Virtual Voices event found those in attendance unanimously agreed understanding media literacy is vital for the nation's future.
Everybody polled at the gathering agreed the government should do more to support media literacy nationwide.
Media students at university who work part-time in the industry to support their studies could be interested to hear the government is being urged to improve the nation's media literacy.
Iain Dale, a keynote speaker at the event, told delegates: "There has never been more of an opportunity for young people to get involved with decision making through media.
"It is possible to influence opinion, organise campaigns and comment on any view that seems biased in a way that has never been possible before."
He added that developing skills in media literacy is important not only to those who want to work in the industry but for anyone who wants to understand the world around them and have their say.
Caroline Norbury, chief executive of South West Screen, said the event was designed to encourage and support young people to have their say and make decisions to shape their lives.
Meanwhile it was reported by Personnel Today last week that a report by Universities UK predicts that private firms will become more involved in governing education in the next 20 years.
