report: firms could shape uni courses
11-Jul-2008

Report: Firms could shape uni courses Employers may play a larger role in forming the structure of degrees and the types of courses offered, according to a report.

Universities UK has predicted one possible outcome of the drop in applicants to university between now and 2027 is that private firms will be more involved in governing education, reports Personnel Today.

The report details how students may be given the option to study part-time alongside their work.

Another option is that firms will gain the power to award degrees, taking over from poor-performing universities.

The report has produced these predictions in response to that fact there will be markedly less 18-year-olds between 2009 and 2027, meaning fewer people will attend university, says the magazine.

University UK has said educational organisations may have to merge as they will struggle to attract students.

In related news, the Guardian has recently reported firms are losing faith in degree classifications, according to research from the Association of Graduate Recruiters.
