staff call for 'greener workplaces'
08-Jul-2008

Staff call for 'greener workplaces' Employees believe their workplaces are wasting energy and something should be done about it, one new survey has found.

A report released this week by Unite - entitled How Green Is My Workplace? - revealed an overwhelming majority (83 per cent) of workers in the electronics and IT sectors felt energy was wasted where they work.

Environmentally-conscious IT or electronics students working part-time in the industry to support their studies could be interested to hear their peers are calling for more action to be taken by firms to ensure workplaces become greener.

The report also found 83 per cent of staff wanted the union to become involved in designing and implementing measures to improve energy-efficiency in the workplace.

Unite's findings came after the union polled 10,000 of its members and it is now urging the organisations to ensure executive pay and bonuses are linked to the firm's performance in meeting environmental targets.

Environment minister Hilary Benn welcomed the report saying climate change is the biggest challenge facing the world today.

"The commitment of industry to deal with climate change is growing in the UK. I believe that trade unions and their members have a vital role to play … trade unionists can really help change to happen in the workplace as part of the move to a lower carbon economy," he added.

Unite claims to be the nation's biggest union with more than two million members in the public and private sectors.
