degree class 'not imperative'
08-Jul-2008

Degree class 'not imperative' Businesses are losing faith in degree classifications, according to the Guardian.

Students with a 2:2 searching for jobs after recently graduating could be interested to hear comments their degree classification may not set them back in their quest to kick-start their career.

A study by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) has revealed that some employers are finding a 2:2 from one university could be the equivalent of a first gained elsewhere.

Speaking to the Guardian, Carl Gilleard from the AGR said: "Employers have not abandoned degree classifications overnight, but there is a growing awareness that graduates have other things to offer."

The report found a third of recruiters will consider employing someone with a 2:2, up from a quarter in 2007.

Rebecca Fielding, talent manager at HJ Heinz, told the newspaper employers who will not consider applicants with a 2:2 were missing out on excellent candidates.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph has reported that the same AGR survey has shown graduate salaries have stalled as a result of the credit crunch.

The average salary for university leavers this year is £24,500, an increase of 1.8 per cent compared with 2007.
