permanent staff demand falls
08-Jul-2008

Permanent staff demand falls Students who work as temps in order to support their studies may be pleased to hear that employers are continuing to take on short-term staff while permanent placements are falling.

A report by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG has indicated that temporary staff may fare better than those looking for permanent work although demand for staff has reduced in all fields.

Kevin Green, the REC's chief executive, said: "The continuous growth of temporary recruitment shows that this is being used to meet peaks and troughs in business workloads."

He added applicants need to stay positive as there are still positions to be filled and he said recruitment agencies will be doing all they can to find suitable talent.

However, Alan Nolan, KPMG's director, stated that businesses would not be growing as much as previously expected and he predicted widespread redundancy.

Mr Nolan warned that even the "usually robust" temporary market was expected to come under pressure.

The REC is the trade organisation that represents the recruitment industry.

It states recruitment is a £26.673 billion industry responsible for placing about 787,000 employees in permanent work each year and sending out 1,377,740 temps on assignment each week.
