govt putting lives at risk, says ucatt

Govt putting lives at risk, says Ucatt Government complacency over workplace safety is putting lives at risk, one construction union has said.

The Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (Ucatt) has responded to the government's comments over the recent Work and Pensions Select Committee Report to the Health and Safety Executive by claiming it is putting workers lives at risk.

One of the union's main concerns is that the authority is again failing to support statutory directors' duties for health and safety at work.

Ucatt believes the current voluntary guidance is not working as less than half (44 per cent) of companies are following the approach.

Students working part-time on construction sites during the summer to raise cash to support themselves at university could be interested to hear their welfare is being fought for by the union.

Alan Ritchie, the TUC general secretary, said self-regulation does not work in dangerous casualised industries such as construction.

Ministers are giving the impression they think it is more important to stuff educational material into envelopes rather than inspect sites, he added.

Ucatt is the UK's only trade union specialising in construction and represents 125,000 members across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
