Address sex discrimination, says expert

Address sex discrimination, says expert Urgent action is needed to address the imbalance of women in all areas of business life, one expert has said.

Karen Gill, founder of female business website everywoman, suggests the situation is getting worse despite the new Equalities Bill.

Female students working on internships could be interested to hear pressure is being applied to put the issue back to the top of the social agenda in the UK.

Ms Gill said whether or not it is consciously followed, there is "blatant sexual discrimination" going on within the nation's workplaces.

"The issue is that there is still real disparity in the amount of money that women are paid for similar type work, and there's massive, massive under-representation of women in senior positions in business," she added.

Something needs to be done to address the imbalance of women in all areas of business life, she concluded.

Equality minister Harriet Harman has set out plans allowing employers to discriminate in favour of female and ethnic minority job candidates.

The BBC reports that official figures show that for every pound a man earns, a woman earns 87 pence.
