housing shortage hits workers
02-Jul-2008

Housing shortage hits workers The state of the housing market will affect the UK's labour market, new research suggests.

According to the Trades Union Congress' (TUC) latest report Fair Homes: Building a New Deal for Housing, the country is in the middle of a house shortage crisis as 1.5 million people are in need of decent properties.

The report revealed falling house prices limiting the number of homes for sale at a time when the country needs more real estate than ever before will have a "huge impact" on working life.

It welcomes the government's plans to build five new eco towns.

Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said everyone should be able to afford decent housing but for many of those in rented accommodation owning their own remains a "distant dream".

"Housing can have a huge impact upon an individual's working life and how productive they are once they go to work. Huge regional differences in the cost of housing have led to labour shortages in certain areas," he added.

Workers living in poor housing are more likely to suffer from ill-health and are less likely to be productive at work, he concluded.

Graduates thinking of embarking upon a new career could be interested to hear that where they look could affect their chances of finding decent housing and thus affecting their performance at work.

Meanwhile, last month the TUC called on employers to do more to address issues such as sex discrimination.
