Trinity Mirror has said it is scrapping this year's summer graduate intake following a drop in revenue from advertising and plummeting share prices, it has been reported.

A spokesman from the newspaper group told Press Gazette that the decision to cancel sponsorship for two places on its graduate recruitment scheme had been made in light of the current economic downturn.

The scheme was expected to be in August and interviews scheduled for this week to determine who would be selected have been cancelled, according to the news provider.

Each year, those selected for the graduate training spend four months with the Press Association in Newcastle followed by a stint with titles from the Mirror Group.

Furthermore, the group has also said it has stopped recruiting across all of its titles.

"We must ensure our cost base is as variable as possible," the spokesman explained, adding that the suspension of recruitment would "remain in place for the foreseeable future".

One famous graduate who took part in the group's scheme was former government director of communications Alastair Campbell.
