it work is boring, says poll

IT work is boring, says poll Students perceive the IT sector to have a bright future but fear the work is boring, one new study has found.

Research carried out by the Career Development Organisation (CRAC) launched at the British Computer Society on Tuesday (June 23rd) found that half of IT employers are failing to fill their vacancies.

Students looking for summer internships at major IT firms could be interested to hear the profession has many vacancies and is generally not deemed a fashionable career choice.

It also revealed less than one in ten of respondents felt the benefits and importance of a computing degree was effectively communicated to them at school.

Robin Mellors-Bourne, CRAC development director, said more than 60 per cent of non-computing students deemed boring work as the reason for not entering the sector.

"Employers should be able to counter that kind of perception. We found that very few of the students hold negative perceptions about the IT profession or its people," he added.

The survey suggests women are attracted by the impact that IT projects have in other sectors while men prefer the technical projects, he concluded.

Meanwhile, it was claimed by Graduate Prospects last week that students applying for internships can utilise the internet in order to get a head start.

Find and apply for summer internships, Easter internships and Placement year internships through the Internship Job Search, or use the All Jobs Search to find other types of student job vacancies and work opportunities.
