council staff vote for strike action
25-Jun-2008

Council staff vote for strike action Local government workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland have voted in favour of a series of sustained strike actions over a row about pay.

UNISON members voted by a majority of 55 per cent to 45 per cent in favour of the industrial action with the recommendations being decided upon today (June 24th) before the national strike committee meet on Friday (June 27th).

Workers had been offered a below-inflation pay rise of 2.45 per cent.

Dave Prentis, the union's general secretary, said the vote was a clear message that local government employers are willing to fight for a decent raise.

"Most of them are low paid workers, who are hit hardest by food and fuel price hikes and they see the unfairness of boardroom bonanzas and big city bonuses," he added.

Students who work part-time for the local government in order to support their studies could be interested to hear of the action which could provoke a higher pay rise for local authority staff.

According to the union, almost 250,000 staff earn less than £6.50 per hour and it asked for either a six per cent or 50 pence per hour rise, depending which was greater.

Nearly 600,000 council workers – including binmen, dinner ladies, architects and surveyors – were balloted.

Meanwhile, strikes by fire and rescue service staff severely hit services run by Scottish airline Loganair, the BBC reports.
