UK firms are leading the way as the biggest providers of staff training in Europe, new research suggests.

A Cegos survey of 1,000 medium and large firms from five of Europe's leading nations found that nearly two thirds (61 per cent) of staff in the UK received training last year compared to less than half of those in the other nations, Personnel today reports.

Students working in placements at UK firms could be interested to hear they are more likely to receive training while at the company.

The poll of firms in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain revealed 55 per cent of UK organisations provided e-learning, compared to 51 per cent in Spain and less than half in the other countries.

It also found the UK and Germany were leading the way with staff coaching as 86 and 74 per cent respectively use the method of training.

Nine out of ten UK and French firms have a training department, a score that is second only to Germany which boasts 96 per cent of its businesses with such units.

However, spending on training in the UK, is less than most of its European neighbours as an average of £261,000 is spent per firm, compared to £829,000 in France, Germany's £684,000, £292,000 in Spain and Italy's £236,000.
