British firms are spending a vast amount of money on employee benefits, one new survey has found.

A new study carried out by HR firm Aon Consulting has revealed British firms spend between 20 and 40 per cent of salary in additional benefits.

Students who are about to begin internships next year could be interested to hear how much UK businesses are forking out to offer staff additional perks such as gym membership, fresh fruit and office parties.

The poll also found 98 per cent of British workers underestimate the cost of benefits they enjoy.

Gareth Ashley-Jones, head of the firm's flexible benefits department, said: "There is a large gap between perception and reality – the research shows clearly that people do not understand the true costs of their perks and suggests that they are taking them for granted."

The results will be a blow to many firms who are investing a great amount of money on offering "attractive benefit packages" to their workforce as a means of attracting, retaining and motivating staff, he added.

Meanwhile, a recent report carried out by the Trades Union Congress in conjunction with the Confederation of British Industry found firms that promote diversity benefit from more productive staff and a higher morale in the office.
