Scotland's labour market is not showing many effects from the uncertain economic climate, new figures have suggested.

The Bank of Scotland Labour Market Report revealed the rate of job growth showed a decline of less than one quarter (0.2 per cent) of a per cent last month.

Scottish students looking for part-time work to support themselves during the summer months could be interested to hear demand for staff north of the border is increasing at a quicker rate than in England.

Figures showed that while the UK index for job growth stood at 49.6 per cent, Scotland's stood at 53.3 per cent in April slipping from 53.5 per cent the previous month.

Martin Ellis, the Bank of Scotland's chief economist, said job growth in the country remains "relatively firm" despite the restrain in market conditions last summer.

"Demand for staff and permanent staff placement growth is steady and is stronger than in other parts of the UK. A number of sectors have shown notable resilience, with demand for healthcare professionals especially firm," he added.

The report found the medical sector is the most sought-after for both temporary and permanent workers.

According to the firm, the report is based on a monthly survey of 100 employment consultants in London and Scotland.
