Orange has announced that it is set to bring jobs back to the UK from Indian call centres.

In a move that could provide part-time jobs for students, the mobile phone giant will create 500 new positions as it brings customer-facing jobs back to the UK, part of the firm's aims to move all customer queries dealt with in the UK.

Tom Alexander, the new chief executive of the mobile communications firm, has halted the expansion of its offshore call centres, where it currently employs 1,500 people.

Speaking to journalists, he said: "We're proposing to change the shape of the organisation and the way the business works to serve the 21st-century customer."

"I have a very clear ambition to make us the best-loved communications brand," he added.

According to the Press Association, the firm – owned by France Telecom – has 15.8 mobile customers and 1.1 million broadband users in the UK.

In related news, Gartner revealed last month that mobile phone sales soared by more than one-tenth in the first quarter of this year.

The analyst claimed worldwide sales reached 294.3 million units between January and March.
