Students thinking about going away on roadtrips this summer should make sure they have got sufficient insurance cover should something happen.
Rias, a division of Fortis Insurance UK, revealed those thinking of motoring abroad should make sure they have adequate breakdown cover because a tow home could end up costing them £1,000.
The insurance provider advised motorists take a wallet containing their passport and UK driving licence as well as original vehicle registration documents and the certificate of motor insurance, to be kept with them at all times.
In order to reduce the risk of car crime, it urged roadtrippers to never leave valuables or personal possessions on show inside an unattended vehicle.
Janet Connor, the firm's managing director, said: "Getting the correct insurance in place should be as essential a part of a pre-holiday to-do list as remembering to pack your toothbrush."
According to Gap Insurance more than 500,000 vehicles are written off each year.
The Association of British Insurers revealed this week that comprehensive policies will cover the damage caused by the recent floods in the West Country.
