London offers the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, new research suggests.
A thinkbroadband.com study found connection speeds in the capital are faster than anywhere else in the country and almost twice that of Wales and Northern Ireland.
Students who enjoy surfing the net to download music, research essays or wheel and deal on eBay may be interested to hear that those in London get the best speeds.
The research also revealed the slowest speeds are found in rural areas due to a lack of cable and phone line access.
Andrew Ferguson, the editor of the website, said Ofcom may be correct saying the "digital divide" does not exist in terms of people actually being able to get broadband.
"[But] a divide does exist in broadband speeds - those in dense urban areas and those in rural areas," he added.
Northern Ireland was revealed as having the slowest average speed at 2258Kbps while London boasted 4,460Kbps compared to the UK average of 3,238Kbps.
Michael Phillips, of ConsumerChoices.co.uk, told the Daily Mail's thisismoney website: "The government must take action now to improve internet speeds for rural communities and not rely solely on market forces to drive change."
It was reported last month by silicom.com that the latest figures from the BBC shows its iPlayer is booming and had received around 21 million programme requests in April.
