Student motorists have been told that guaranteed asset protection (Gap) insurance is for everyone.
Click4Gap.co.uk revealed that the type of insurance is not just for "brand new" cars and the premiums paid are the same for everyone regardless of criteria such as age, location or points on a licence.
Andy Bendell, the firm's marketing director, said: "Gap insurance is a little-known product. The majority of people are introduced to it when they buy a brand new car from a dealership.
He added that though most people are educated at a dealership, comparing cover and premiums online is "always a smart thing to do".
Gap insurance is designed to bridge the gap between a car's original market value and what the insurer actually pays when it is stolen or written off.
It can be used to clear any existing debts still owed for the car and finance a replacement vehicle.
According to the firm more than 500,000 vehicles are written off each year.
Meanwhile, the Association of British Insurers revealed this week that comprehensive policies will cover damage caused to vehicles by recent flash floods in the West Country.
