businesses to 'employ more temps'

Businesses to 'employ more temps' A quarter of UK firms plan to recruit more temporary workers within the next six months because of the current uncertain financial climate, it has been reported.

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (Rec) survey of more than 100 HR bosses also found 84 per cent of firms will use more temps to help them react quickly to their evolving markets, according to Online Recruitment magazine.

Students who work as temps to support their studies could be interested to hear that British businesses are going to increase their use of temporary workers.

The website reported that the survey was conducted ahead of next Monday's meeting of the European Union (EU) Employment Council, which will be discussing details in the UK government's deal on agency work.

Rec director of external relations, Tom Hadley, told the website it is crucial details regarding new regulations for agency work are done properly due to the delicate state of the country's labour market.

"This is not just an issue for employers, but also for workers at a time when the benefits of temp and contract work in terms of the flexibility, opportunity and employability that it provides is increasingly recognised," he added.

Meanwhile it was reported last week in Personnel Today that manufacturers' organisation EEF believes the government faces a huge test trying to convince the EU to see out the 12-week watershed previously agreed in the new agency workers bill.
