Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should charge broadband customers the same no matter where they live, one industry expert has said.
Broadband price "disparity" is not fair and consumers in rural areas should not have to pay more than those in more populated areas, according to BroadbandChoices.co.uk.
Michael Phillips, product director for the website, said it was no surprise that rural broadband access had overtaken urban because of online services such as banking and shopping.
He called on ISPs to "address the digital divide" they had created through "regionalised pricing".
"The evidence is there that people in more outlying regions are actually adopting broadband in higher numbers. So the suppliers need to get in there and invest in local exchanges, so that there's not this disparity," he added.
A recent Ofcom report released last month found that rural broadband has overtaken that of its urban neighbour for the first time, as 59 per cent of country homes in England have broadband connections compared to 57 per cent of inner-city properties.
The contrast was biggest in Wales where 51 per cent of rural households had broadband compared to 43 per cent of urban ones.
Meanwhile, it emerged last week that the BBC's website is delivering an excellent service to licence payers despite overspending by more than double last year, according to its trust review.
