Many workers are forced to work at least three extra hours a day, new research has shown.

A Crowne Plaza survey found that due to technological advancements, three-quarters (75 per cent) of office staff have to work at least three extra hours with five per cent saying they now have to work 14-hour days, the Daily Mail reports.

Those polled revealed that breakthroughs such as the internet and other gadgets are to blame, making them contactable at all hours.

More than 60 per cent divulged they take their BlackBerry or mobile phone to bed with them in case they get an important work call during the night.

A spokesman for the hotelier told the publication that the nation is "seduced by technology".

This could be interesting news for students who are currently looking for temporary jobs for the summer as they may be expected to be work longer days, which could result in them earning more money to support their studies next term.

In other news, the Institute of Employment Studies revealed last week that offering workers benefits such as health insurance, gym memberships and regular social events is a tax-efficient way to reward them without having to use payment.

The body's director of HR research and consultancy, Pete Reilly, said: "It's about understanding what your workforce is like - age-wise, gender-wise, income-wise - and tailoring your offer to meet those."
