Mobile phone sales soared by more than one-tenth (13.6 per cent) in the first quarter of 2008, one analyst has claimed.
Gartner has revealed worldwide sales of mobile phones reached 294.3 million units during the first three months of this year.
However, the analyst also found that sales in Western Europe showed a decline of 16.4 per cent compared to the same time last year - the first such fall since it began tracking the market in 2001.
Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at Gartner UK, said while emerging markets were driven by new subscribers' growth, mature markets felt the pressures of the current "uncertain economic environment".
"Phone manufacturers should strengthen their mid-tier offerings in order to cater to those users that might be reticent to invest too much money in replacing their old phones when the economic environment remains challenging," she added.
Remaining the clear market leader, Nokia sold more than 115 million handsets in the period of January to March this year, as its market share rose from 35.5 per cent to 39.1 per cent since the same period in 2007
The analyst added that Samsung "maintained its momentum" with sales reaching 42.4 million units.
Meanwhile, it was reported by allafrica.com last month that Nokia East Africa has launched a special recycling initiative offering mobile phone users an environmentally-friendly way to dispose of old phones.
