Embrace flexible work, says expert

Embrace flexible work, says expert Flexible working offers benefits for all parties concerned, one expert has said.

The director of BT's employment policy, Caroline Waters, has called on businesses to change their mindset and support flexible working practices in order to feel their benefits.

Speaking at the Work Wise UK summit last week, Ms Waters stated that the working practice also has a positive impact on the environment.

"The only reason most managers want people close is because they think it gives them control," she added.

"Flexibility and being hot on the green agenda allows you to reach out and get the best people who all have different perspectives."

Students who plan to work for BT on internships next year could be pleased to hear the organisation is a pioneer of the flexible working practice.

According to new figures obtained by Work Wise UK in association with the AA, the average commuter spends almost 29 days each year travelling to work, which equates to more than five years over a full working life.

The Chartered Institute of Personal Development released a report last year that cited recruitment and retention as the two reasons firms offer flexible working.
