new temp bill could be rushed
28-May-2008

New temp bill could be rushed The new agency workers bill could be introduced earlier than originally agreed, it has been reported.

Manufacturers' organisation EEF has revealed that the government faces a huge test trying to convince ministers and the European Union to see out the 12-week watershed previously agreed, according to Personnel Today.

Students who plan to work as temps during the summer holidays could be interested to hear that they could be entitled to equal rights during this period if the bill is pushed forward quickly.

David Yeadle, the EEF's deputy director of employment policy, told the publication that the three-month stall is better for employers than the initial six weeks proposed but it is "a long way away" from what businesses had wanted.

"There are still a number of hurdles to clear and officials might be unhappy with its wording and take a much stronger line," he added.

It was reported last week that the government, trade unions and the Confederation of British Industry reached an agreement on new rights for temporary workers.

The rights entitle temps to the same legal protection as permanent staff after 12 weeks in the job.
