Employers are continuing their graduate recruitment programmes despite the ongoing global economic climate, it has been reported.

The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) revealed the credit crunch has made little difference to the employment available to graduates seeking work, according to Online Recruitment magazine.

Students looking for work after recently completing their degrees could be interested to hear that the financial climate will not hamper their search for a job.

Elspeth Farrar of the association told the publication: "Students are still getting jobs and companies are still recruiting, though it may be that in certain areas there is slightly more competition for places."

She added that employers do not want to see a "skills gap" in the future by refusing to hire graduates now.

The Association of Graduate Recruiters revealed that more than two-thirds (69 per cent) of firms will have more job vacancies than they did last year.

AGCAS revealed recently that graduates in certain sectors such as engineering are highly sought after as companies are in "vast competition" to recruit them.

Ms Farrar added that while there are definite shortages in some subjects, other competitive markets are oversubscribed and more difficult to break into.

A recent survey by Executive Connections found that one third (33 per cent) of companies are seeking to recruit graduates in 2008 compared to eight per cent in 2007.
