Work benefits offer bosses as well as employees advantages, one industry expert has said.

The Institute of Employment Studies (IES) has revealed that offering staff benefits such as gym memberships, health insurance and regular social events is a tax-efficient way to reward them without having to use payment.

Students who are looking for temporary work during the summer could be interested to hear that some employers reward their staff with such perks.

Pete Reilly, director of HR research and consultancy at the independent body, said there is an argument that a diverse work force in a increasingly "consumerist society" wants more "personalised pay and conditions" and firms can offer staff a choice as to which benefits suit them best.

"It's about understanding what your workforce is like – age-wise, gender-wise, income-wise – and tailoring your offer to meet those," he added.

Mr Reilly concluded that firms should find the "right buttons to press" in relation to different groups in order to have "some sort of discernable effect".

Established in 1969, the IES has expanded into a not-for-profit independent centre for research and evidence-based consultancy in employment, labour market and human resource policy and practice.
