Employers are seeking temporary workers instead of permanent staff, according to new figures.
Smaller businesses in particular are favouring temps and part-timers instead of a full-time permanent workforce, the data indicate, because of their flexibility due to the financial uncertainty in the economic climate since the credit crunch.
Figures from a Badenoch and Clark survey revealed a steady rise in the number of temp roles in the financial services sector; while during the first three months of 2007 two-thirds of jobs available were permanent, a year on three-quarters are temporary.
Students who plan on working as temps during the summer holidays in order to earn some extra cash could be interested to hear that temporary job opportunities are on the up.
Guy Emmerson, head of the international consultant's temporary recruitment, said that in an "uncertain marketplace" there tend to be shifts in favour of using temps.
"They give companies a great deal of flexibility and help them to jump a lot of the hurdles the market can throw up, and the market is certainly throwing up a lot of hurdles right now," he added.
Meanwhile it was reported earlier in the week that temporary workers will be entitled to equal rights as permanent staff after an agreement was made between all parties concerned with the Temporary and Agency Workers Bill.
The equal treatment follows six years of talks at European Union level and entitles temporary staff to the same legal protection as permanent staff after 12 weeks on the job.
