students 'demand more from summer work'

Students 'demand more from summer work' Students have specific demands of what they expect from their summer jobs, one expert has said.

As the summer holidays are on the horizon when students will be free for the extended holiday period, the National Association of Student Employment Services (Nases) has revealed that many will not just take any old job.

The national representative body for student employment services said that course-related criteria often direct the work sought after.

It added that working in certain countries and specific industries are also key contributing factors.

Alison Clark, director of Nases, said: "Quite often in the summer, with a more concentrated period of time and fewer commitments than during term time, students have specific demands from their summer job."

She added that term-time work does not necessarily hinder educational commitments.

"In fact some institutions feel that working no more than 15 hours per week during term time positively impacts a student's academic performance," she concluded.

Research by the Royal Bank of Scotland found that last summer more than two-fifths (41 per cent) of students worked part-time during term time to earn extra cash, down four per cent from the previous year.

Average hours dropped slightly from 16 hours to 15.6 but nearly a third of those working still did more than 20 hours.
