training 'to hit record highs'

Training 'to hit record highs' Part-time workers could be better trained than ever before after stats showed employers are splashing out more on teaching people new skills.

The National Employer Skills Survey 2007 says bosses spent an average of around £1,750 per employee in 2007, an increase of 11 per cent on the previous year, Personnel Today reports.

Students who rely on part-time work to fund their studies could therefore be picking up extra skills through their jobs as well as extra cash.

Quoted by the magazine, skills secretary John Denham said: "The need to improve the nation's skills is a key priority for the government as we face increasing competition from across the globe."

Overall bosses spent £38.6 billion on training staff last year, 16 per cent up on the same figure from 2005.

The survey's author, the Learning and Skills Council, polled 79,000 businesses and called the report "positive", adding fewer employers were reporting skills gaps while it is now less likely that a job will not be filled because of a lack of candidates with the appropriate skills.
