Students in the Cambridge area have been warned to be vigilant after an expert claimed that the city is the worst in Britain for mobile phone theft.
Recent research by CPP phonesafe showed that places such as Cambridge and Leicestershire experience more phone theft than bigger cities like London and Birmingham, with 20 per cent of the population reporting a theft in Cambridge compared with only 16 per cent in London.
John Walkley, head of CPP phonesafe, said: "The most likely place to have your phone stolen is in a pub or club so anywhere with a vibrant nightlife and a student population is going to be more susceptible to mobile phone crime.
"You're not really paying much attention once you've had a few drinks, so really you just need to be careful."
He added that August and September are the peak times of year for phone theft as "it's toward the end of the summer, people are out and about in pubs and clubs".
Meanwhile 100,000 UK phone users aged between 16 and 24 are taking advantage of free mobiles from Blyk.
In exchange for signing up to six advertising messages per day, users are given 43 free minutes of talk and 217 texts every month, according to Mobile Marketing News.
