Retail bosses are "well on the way" to achieving plastic bag reduction targets, an industry representative has said.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) claimed retailers are implementing appropriate schemes to encourage their customers to use fewer carrier bags.

Environmentally-conscious students working part-time to support their studies may be pleased to hear firms are finally cutting back on the use of plastic.

A BRC spokesman said: "Individual retailers know their customers best. Each is developing appropriate schemes to further reduce the impact of carrier bags."

The spokesman added retailers were doing well with efforts to slash plastic bag use by 25 per cent by the end of the year.

Firms introducing new methods include Marks & Spencer, which is now charging five pence for every carrier given out.

Earlier this year prime minister Gordon Brown called for more "responsibility" among individuals, shops and officials over the issue and use of plastic bags, reports the Times.

Around 13 billion plastic bags are given out for free every year currently, with each one taking about 1,000 years to break down completely.
