The pin function on mobile phones should be used to help protect users in case of theft, one expert has said.
CPP has revealed the use of the function would make it difficult for thieves to access information that is stored on phones such as email addresses, banking information and card numbers.
John Walkley, head of CPP phonesafe, said as information being kept on phones is more valuable, people need to ensure it is properly protected.
"Make sure you use the pin function because that way it is harder for thieves to access your phone and obtain your information," he added.
Detective superintendent of the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit (NMPCU), Mick McNally, advised people to write down their IMEI (a serial number beneath the phone's battery) so that in the case of a theft it can be blocked quickly.
"If you tell the network that that is your number and it needs to be blocked then it takes all of the value out of the mobile phone for the criminal, so it really makes it worthless to the criminal," he concluded.
The NMPCU was officially launched in December 2003 with the aim to reduce street crime and the number of mobile phones stolen during these offences.
