Organisations should use the current financial climate to boost the commitment of their staff, one expert has said.

Katie Roberts, of Boots, said that firms should show their staff how valuable they are during the credit crunch as it is when they will be judged most by their staff, according to Personnel Today.

This could be interesting news for students working as interns in businesses during this time, as their employer may take heed of this advice and be particularly supportive to them.

Speaking at the Employee Engagement Summit in the City, the high street giant's engagement manager said: "It's crucial to engage with employees, particularly in difficult times.

"The crunch can be used to demonstrate how serious you are about your employees."

Dr David Pendleton, senior consultant at HR consultancy Edgecumbe, added: "There is no better time to show your employees how serious you are than during difficult times. How you act under this climate is how you will be judged by your employees."

Nottingham-based Boots claims to be the UK's leading pharmaceutical, health and beauty retailer and was founded by Jesse Boot in the 19th century.
