The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (Rec) has announced that it is on the "front foot" ahead of the agency bill committee meeting.

Commenting ahead of next week's first committee meeting of the bill that aims to impose equal treatment provisions between temporary workers and permanent employees, it has branded the proposals "vague and unworkable".

Tom Hadley, director of external relations, said: "The equal treatment proposals in the bill are extremely vague and are simply unworkable in practice due to the bureaucracy and uncertainty that would be created, as well as the fact that pay for the vast majority of workers in the UK is individually negotiated.

"In addition, the overwhelmingly bleak picture of agency work that is painted by the trade unions to justify the need for more regulation is not one that the vast majority of agencies or even workers would recognise."

He added that though there are some examples of worker exploitation, regulations are in place to address this.

The statement concluded that any national legislation would be "superceded" by the EU's proposed directive on agency work.

Meanwhile, the Rec's annual temp workers week will be held from June 2nd to 6th with the intention of demonstrating the broad range of professions and industries that temps work in.
