A group of high-street retailers have committed to cutting emissions to reduce their carbon footprint, it has been reported.

Students who work part-time for Argos, Marks & Spencer or Sainsbury's could be interested to hear that their employers are showing a green conscience.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC), which represents retail employers, has announced a series of voluntary commitments that its members will follow, according to Personnel Today.

It was announced at an event with environmental secretary Hilary Benn yesterday (April 30th).

The measures mentioned include cutting emissions from buildings and vehicles, the reduction of waste sent to landfill sites, the cutting of water use, making energy efficient products available and reducing packaging.

Stephen Robertson, BRC director-general, said: "By agreeing industry-wide goals for the next five years, retail is ratcheting up its environmental commitments.
