Asda has launched a pay as you go mobile phone that is cheaper than a packet of cigarettes, it has been reported.
The budget phone is seen as the supermarket's attempt to wage a price war on other retailers, according to the Daily Mail.
It added that customers at other mobile phone stores normally have to buy at least £10 worth of credit in order to buy a low-cost phone but Asda say its customers will not have to buy any credit or sign up to any deals.
The Nokia 1112, Sagem My212x, My220x and My150x will be available on a number of tariffs from Virgin, T-Mobile and Orange.
Asda's pay as you go range will only cost £5 to buy - cheaper than a toy phone.
An Asda spokesman told the publication that "there are no hidden charges or extra costs". He added: "The handsets operate on standard pay as you go tariffs. You can just grab one off the shelf, use it once and throw it away if you wanted.
"It's great for people whose regular mobile phone is perhaps broken or they want a back up, or those who have come to this country for just a few weeks," he concluded.
The supermarket was putting 50,000 handsets on sale nationwide today (April 29th).
Peter Pritchard, Asda trading director, said: "Shoppers are increasingly turning to pay as you go as a way of controlling their spending on mobiles."
