expert discusses new directive

Expert discusses new directive An expert has suggested that the proposed Agency Workers Directive may not have as negative an impact on business as some predict.

Writing for Personnel Today, recruitment expert Emma Ceballos claimed that the directive, which is intended to offer temporary workers similar employment conditions to permanent staff, is unlikely to mean companies avoid taking on temporary workers.

This could be good news for students who work as temps in order to support their university studies.

According to Ms Ceballos, the "flexibility and security" offered by temporary workers has been a "boon for employers" – something she suggested would continue.

"Equal pay and working conditions would not take away the key reason for using temporary staff – the flexibility of terminating placements easily to suit the employer," she explained.

While the introduction of this kind of legislation may mean that finding placements for temporary workers becomes "much more complex", the expert questioned whether demand for such workers would fall significantly.

A recent survey undertaken by ContractorCalculator revealed that many contractors in the UK are not in favour of the directive.

The organisation claimed that nearly all of those questioned would prefer to remain as contractors rather than employees.

A further 91 per cent claimed to earn more as contractors, while 75 per cent said that they did not want new employee rights.
