unions pressure for public sector pay rise
24-Apr-2008

Unions pressure for public sector pay rise Trade Unions are pressuring the prime minister to increase public sector pay, it has been reported.

Union bosses are insisting that Gordon Brown must give public workers a pay rise after his controversially scrapping of the ten pence tax rate, according to Personnel Today.

This could be good news for students that are working part-time jobs in the public sector to support their studies as they may be in line for a pay rise.

Referring to the fact that state-paid workers were getting poorer, Mark Serwotka, the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) general secretary, described the situation as a "disgrace".

Speaking at the annual conference of the Scottish TUC yesterday he added: "On top of this, the abolition of the ten pence tax rate affects directly many of the low paid civil and public sector workers who are our members.

"We have recently negotiated agreements on redundancy and privatisation. We call on the government now to address low pay and our demands for fair pay for public sector workers to at least the level of inflation."

Meanwhile, the first minister of the Scottish parliament, Alex Salmond and Scottish Labour leader Wendy Alexander both pitched for the union's support at the conference.

Both spoke for around 20 minutes and both won three bursts of applause during their speeches with the first minister winning a slightly longer round of applause, reports the Press Association.
