fsb urge local authorities to support independent businesses

FSB urge local authorities to support independent businesses Local authorities have been urged to do more to support local businesses by an industry body.

This could be good news for students working part-time for small local businesses to support their studies as their jobs may be safer if authorities act upon the Federation of Small Businesses' (FSB) advice.

Simon Briault, a spokesperson for the FSB, warned against "clone towns" urging local authorities to act sensitively when implementing traffic management in town centres.

He added that bad decisions on those matters result in shoppers being put off visiting town centres where independent shops are, opting for big retail parks instead.

"So many local council decisions affect the local market – the local council has control over planning decisions, and can be bullied by supermarkets into setting up huge out-of-town retail centres.

"We'd like them to be sterner on that sort of thing," he concluded.

The FSB also called on local councils to offer independent businesses more in the terms of business rates relief.

Formed in 1974, it is the largest campaigning pressure group and promotes and protects the interests of the self-employed and owners of small firms.

It now has over 205,000 members across 33 regions and 230 branches.
The Conservative Party recently launched ‘Disappearing Britain’, the interim report of the party's Small Shops Commission.

At its launch, David Cameron urged local authorities to make better use of their powers in order to protect small businesses.
