Gap Year Job News

The government has launched a new consultation to strengthen the relationship between universities and employers, Personnel today reports.

A stronger bond between universities and employers may be good news for students, as it could improve the chance of finding out about work placements for gap years.

The high-level skills consultation would consult industry figures for their views on how to raise potential employees' skills.

EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, remained sceptical as it raised its concern that the government's plans on skills were taking so long.

Martin Temple, EEF chairman, said that he wanted to see the encouraging words turned into a firm delivery.

"Employers see strong skills in communication, teamwork and business acumen as key attributes," he added.

"As such, EEF supports the greater focus on employability and the responsibility of universities to deliver this.

"This will be vital if universities are to help deliver on the government's innovation and enterprise agendas which business and industry strongly supports," he concluded.

GuildHE university and college heads have said that the changes will have to be carefully managed and include more investment.

Alice Hynes, GuildHE chief executive, said that they will play a full and active role in the consultation process and search for ways to make the aspirations a reality.
