Leading technology companies have agreed to commit to a licensing framework to encourage the growth of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) new mobile network technology.
Nokia and Ericsson are among the firms that have pledged to help raise the take-up of the technology by agreeing to license their patents to each other on fair terms.
Royalties for LTE patents in handsets will not be above ten per cent of the sale price, with the maximum royalty permitted fixed below $10 (£5.09).
Hkan Eriksson, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Ericsson, said: "The adoption of this initiative will reassure operators of the early widespread adoption of LTE technology throughout the consumer electronics industry."
LTE is a fourth generation mobile telephone standard that is being developed as a successor to GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).
PC Pro reported that the first LTE-enabled networks promising faster data transmission than existing mobile technologies should begin appearing in two years.
Meanwhile, Techradar.com has reported that Samsung is in the process of developing a water-powered mobile phone battery.
The micro fuel cell and hydrogen generator will eventually be capable of powering small electronic devices for up to ten hours, according to the online technology news provider.
Oh Yong-soo, vice-president of Samsung's research centre, told the website: "When the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas.
"The gas is then supplied to the fuel cell where it reacts with oxygen in the air to generate power."
