Katie Whiting, 22, is set to pursue a career in shoe design thanks to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship scheme.

The news could be positive for students studying fashion all over the country, as it shows that internships are available in top couture houses.

Ms Whiting, who is a University of East London fashion graduate and based in Hastings, told the Worthing Herald the initiative – which will see her working in the shoe department of Vivienne Westwood – will help to extend her experience in the field.

The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship scheme provides awards of between £2,000 and £15,000 which are designed to help people further their career.

To qualify for the funding, applicants need to show they are already highly proficient within their sector and must live and work in the UK.

Ms Whiting, who will receive £9,000 from the scholarship fund, hopes that the scheme will enable her to sell her own goods in the future.

"Knowing how to make patterns for my own designs will mean I can produce a collection of shoes to sell and I would like to offer a bespoke service," she told the Herald.
