Student drivers should be "educated and encouraged" to take up eco-friendly car insurance, an industry expert has announced.
Student car insurance company MORE TH>N said that "green insurance packages" are incentives for people to drive hybrid cars.
A saving of around 13 per cent is offered on an annual premium depending on the make and model of the car.
Nick Dear, external communications consultant at MORE TH>N, said that hopefully educating and encouraging drivers to drive in more environmentally friendly ways would be enough to get them to switch, rather than through "coercion".
"It's definitely keeping it in the public sphere and it's definitely educating people and bringing it to the forefront of their minds," he remarked.
"Twenty-two million drivers would consider switching to a hybrid car if they were cheaper to run than a normal car.
"Therefore it follows that if we're doing our bit to make insurance cheaper then hopefully that will help those 22 million to switch," he concluded.
A survey by uSwitch from January this year found that green cars emit 17 per cent less CO2 than standard cars.
Sales of green cars rose 70 per cent last year to 17,000.
However, a recent report by MotorInsurance suggested that 21 per cent of UK drivers do not care about their own car's fuel efficiency.
