Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the UK may offer broadband deals alongside packages for music downloads, it has emerged, making it simpler for students to download music.
The move may be an attempt to stop illegal downloads and encourage people to get their music from the internet legally.
Jim Griffin, head of Geffen records, told Portfolio.com: "Today, it has become purely voluntary to pay for music. If I tell you to go listen to this band, you could pay, or you might not. It's pretty much up to you."
One of the biggest record labels has called for ISPs to charge a flat fee for music in their record library.
In related news, Vodafone has announced that it is struggling to cope with the demand for dongles, which supplies users with mobile internet.
There has been a massive marketing campaign for the device which plugs into a user's USB port on their laptop and provides internet wherever they go.
Broadband deals from Vodafone, which go with the dongle, start at £15 a month. 3 also offers a broadband dongle deal which starts at £5 a month.
