Students told to look at SMEs

03 Apr 2008

Students told to look at SMEs Students who are about to graduate have been advised that small to medium sized (SME) companies can provide graduate jobs and opportunities which are highly beneficial to their career.

The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) has said that by joining an SME, graduates can advance their career faster and get noticed more.

Margaret Dane, chief executive of AGCAS, said: "The scope for making one's mark is greater in a smaller company, but of course, one is also more visible. Support systems may be less formal, but may also be more personal for that very reason, so working for an SME can prove an attractive option and indeed a necessity for many."

She added that SMEs "vary enormously" in how they run the businesses that they operate and there will be high expectations of graduates joining them.

The association has also said that graduate training schemes can provide valuable experience for the people who are lucky enough to get onto them.

Students should also take advantage of internships and placements according to the AGCAS as they give them the chance to gain experience.

The AGCAS is the professional association for higher education practitioners.
