Students lucky enough to be flying around the world during gap years will soon be able to use their mobile phones on planes.
Plans to give passengers on planes the opportunity to use their mobile phones have been given the green light from the regulator Ofcom.
The proposals still have to be accepted by the European Aviation Safety Agency before they can e implemented.
It will be up to the individual airlines whether they go ahead and offer the service to passengers or not. If the plans went ahead a base station would be put onto the planes and mobile phones would be able to connect to it.
However mobile phones and the base centre would have to be switched off during take-off and landing and the centre would be switched on when the airplane reached 3,000 metres.
Air France was the first airline which brought in the system last December.
Meanwhile, back on the ground a prototype of a mobile phone which can act as a projector has been unveiled. The DLP innovation can act as a stand-alone projector and offers users the chance to give a presentation using only their mobile.
