Working from home can reduce stress in office workers, according to research, providing good news for students who are looking at temporary jobs which allow them to work away from the office.

The report, from Durham Business School, revealed that people who are working at home say that they become much less stressed at home although they do fear that their career might not progress as fast as in the office.

Tom Redman, professor of human resource management at Durham Business School, said: "It seems at least for managerial and professional employees in knowledge-based industries that working from home is an antidote to the stresses of office-based working."

He added that this may be at the expense of "lower levels of support for career development".

It is thought that people who are not working at an office miss out on opportunities to interact with people at work and crucial networking chances. They may also miss out on hearing about opportunities for career progression which are discussed informally at work.

Durham Business School focuses on research on themes such as finance and accounting, economics, work, management and organisation. Its finance research received a rating of grade five, which is the highest possible.
