music playing mobiles more popular
25-Mar-2008

Music playing mobiles more popular Sales of mobile phones which can play music have eclipsed those of devices such as iPods, according to new research.

Frank Dickson, chief research officer for MultiMedia, said: "Voice commoditisation and falling voice call prices are driving a shift in wireless operators to focus on data revenue models and services."

He added that music has been the first "killer app" for operators to be able to drive the consumption of premium content onto handsets.

A report from MultiMedia Intelligence has revealed that half a billion units of music playing mobile phones were sold in 2007, which was higher than the 300 million personal media players which were sold last year.

Meanwhile, students who are looking for the minimum effort to carry around their mobile phone may be pleased to hear that the world's lightest mobile phone has been declared.

The phone, made by Israeli manufacturer Modu, weighs just 1.41 ounces and has been confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records as the most featherweight phone in the world.

According to the company the phone can be added to other "invisible" items people want to carry around with them such as keys and a wallet.
